We were at the science museum with my girls (four and six) last week and I let them roam about the kids' area without constant supervision. My little one got absorbed in something and then realized she didn't know where we were, but she kept her wits about her and found an employee, who helped her find us. And you're right, you can see their confidence grow before your eyes. Visits to museums are impossible if you don’t free-range! I've never seen those tattoos before, but you might try a product called Road ID. You can put any info on it that you want (it's a bracelet w/tag) and a serial # on the back leads to a hotline and/or website where emergency personnel can access info like your cell phone #, any allergies and your doctor's info.
